Thomas Erma died at the age of twenty-five, before he had time to establish himself fully. Nevertheless, his contribution to a certain kind of abstraction was far from negligible. Erma's painting was defined by a combination of dripping and collage. His paintings were actually reconstructed from painted fragments, in a style close to gestural lyric poetry, torn or cut into vertical strips, then assembled in a different order. This method of construction from an initial deconstruction was a way for Erma to repossess the spontaneous gesture, to assimilate and control it. Far from leaving his constructions to chance, Erma preferred a certain type of form dicatated by centrifugal forces which, leaving the centre of the canvas untouched, put the action on the periphery.

Thomas Erma est décédé à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans, avant de pouvoir s'imposer totalement en tant qu'artiste. Pourtant, sa contribution à un certain type d'abstraction est loin d'être négligeable. La peinture d'Erma était définie par l'association de la technique du dripping et celle du collage. Ses oeuvres étaient en fait reconstruites à partir de fragments de peintures, dans un style proche de celui de l'abstraction lyrique, déchirés ou découpés en bandes verticales, puis assemblés dans un ordre différent. Cette méthode de construction à partir d'une déconstruction était le moyen pour Erma de reprendre possession du geste spontané, de pouvoir l'assimiler et le contrôler. Loin de laisser ses compositions guidées par le hasard, Erma préférait les organiser autour d'une force centrifuge qui laissait le centre de la toile intacte, rejetant l'action en périphérie.
